NIOM provides expertises and consultancy in the field of carcinogenic factors, asbestos dust, reproductive hazards, dusts and aerosols, work load, toxicity, pathomorphology and histopathology, pesticides, oxidative stress, carcinogenesis, chemical substances, radiation and noise and vibration:

−  Assessment of health effects of exposure to carcinogenic factors including analysis of cancer risk; analysis of occupational, environmental and genetic determinants of malignant neoplasm;
−  Assessment of health hazard and health risk, analysis of health effects of exposure to asbestos dust, register of employees exposed to asbestos dust, Amiantus programme;
−  Assessment of the influence of occupational and environmental factors on the course and outcome of pregnancy, assessment of the reasons of the low birth weight of the newborns, assessment of effectiveness of prophylactic programmes for pregnant women;

−  Assessment of environmental exposure to dusts and bioaerosols, identification of harmful environmental factors in the material samples and dusts;

−  Elaboration of methods for the identification of fibrous and artificial minerals in samplesof different materials;
−  Organization of basic and advanced courses on the methods for the determination of industrial dusts and their components.

− Ekspertises for governmental agencies setting hygienic standards for work performance, workload, design and construction of workposts as well as regulations on prophylactic examinations of workers;

−  Assessment of toxic effect of chemical substances and physical factors of in vivo and in vitro studies using techniques of molecular biology and cytogenetic techniques; assessment of the early cyto- and genotoxic effects in populations exposed to harmful factors in the environment of work and life; drawing up, verification and implementation of modern methods of assessment of the effect of chemical substances; assessment of the influence of biologically active substances of vegetal origin on the activation of genes encoding enzymes of detoxication processes; assessment of cytotoxic, genotoxic and mutagenic effects of chemical substances, preparations and medical products in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice; assessment of allergic and irritating effects of chemical substances; quantitative and qualitative analyses of xenobiotics and their metabolites in different biological matrices;
−  Pathomorphological studies (macroscopic, histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical) for the assessment of toxic and carcinogenic effects of chemical substances, nanomaterials and mineral dusts;
−  Assessment of individual susceptibility to chemical substances via examination of polymorphism of genes encoding enzymes participating in detoxification process; search for early markers of increased risk of incidence of cancer of various location based on polymorphism of genes participating in maintenance of the proper antioxidative status; information activity concerning carcinogenic substances in the environment of work;

−  Consultations by phone on maximum admissible levels of occupational exposure in Poland and throughout the world;
−  Providing the employers and services involved in safetyand occupational hygiene with information on carcinogenic agents;
−  Providing institution, operating all over the cuntr, with expert opinions on the assassment of occupational exposure to chemical substances, as well as information based on the factographic and biolographic databases on line;
−  Performing analyses on causes of  intoxication based on materials provided by toxicological centers;

−  Individual dosimetry of people occupationally exposed to ionizing photon radiation; analysis of environmental samples for content of natural radioactive isotopes; analysis of exposure of patients caused by diagnostic X-ray examinations; measurement of radon (222-Ra) and products of its decomposition in the air;
(Department of Radiological Protection)

−  Measurement and analysis of physical hazards occurring in the environment of work and municipal environment including noise, infrasound noise, ultrasonic noise, whole body vibrations (general vibrations) and vibrations affecting human body via upper limbs (local vibrations); providing expert opinions and consultations on controversial issues pertaining to occupational exposure to noise, infrasound noise and ultrasonic noise, whole body and local vibrations and prevention of adverse effects of these exposures;

− Among its personnel NIOM  has a National Consultant for Occupational Medicine, whose responsibilities concern education, prophylactic care of the employees, position of occupational medicine among other medical specializations, legislation and cooperation with the Ministry of Health.
