The ranking is prepared by the High Council of Scientific Research in Madrid (CSIC – Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas) and its assumption is to promote making scientific publications available in Internet. Assessment in the ranking is carried out on a basis of Internet resources concerning classified institutions. It also summarizes global efficiency of the institutes and scientific centres as well as reflects their involvement in scientific knowledge dissemination. Development of communication between the scientists in Internet e.g. via Internet publishing houses or knowledge repositories; significance of ventures of Open Access type and positioning of websites of the institutes in Internet and many others aspects were taken into account.

In this year’s ranking the first place in the world  belongs to NIH – National Institutes of Health. According to the Webometrics ranking the best European institution turned out to be CERN – European Organization for Nuclear Research.
