EMPOWER – the European e-platform for promoting health and well-being in the workplace

In January 2020, partners from Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland, the UK, Switzerland and Australia started working on a project to prevent work-related stress.
The project is coordinated and managed by the Spanish Fundació Sant Joan de Déu (FSJD) under the direction of Beatriz Olaya from Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu  and Centre for Biomedical Network Research on Mental Health (CIBERSAM). The Polish partner is the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine.

The project will establish the European platforM to PromOte Wellbeing and HEalth in the woRkplace - EMPOWER.

Mental health problems are a huge burden on both the individual and society. Stigmatisation of people experiencing mental health problems in the workplace results in delayed access to treatment, low social support, difficulties in professional and social roles, unemployment and reduced self-esteem.

Due to the multitude of interventions already available, but also due to the associated implementation barriers, there is an urgent need for a multimodal and integrated e-Health platform. The support offered to workers, in the form of a telephone application, will be based on proven, short and cost-effective interventions currently available in Europe to promote workers' health and prevent widespread mental disorders. It will give employees access to information on the stigmatisation of mentally ill people. Employees will also be able to identify psychosocial risks in their workplace. In addition, they will be able to take self-help behaviours, improve coping strategies and make decisions good for their mental health.

The project involves cooperation between scientists in the fields of psychology, medicine, sociology, public health, economics, ethics, law and IT, as well as participation of employers and employees, insurance companies, people with mental health problems, trade unions and policy makers.

The project is financed by the EU research and innovation programme Horizon 2020
under grant agreement No 848180.

The kick-off meeting will take place on Tuesday 4 February 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.
