Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present great difficulties in the assessment of an adverse effect of metallic mercury on the nervous system. Environmental contamination and occupational hazards as well as pathogenic mechanisms are discussed. Particular attention is paid to differential diagnosis of chronic mercurialism. Its manifestation has various non-specific clinical pictures. Neurasthenic symptoms and signs of encephalopathy are most frequent, whereas psychoorganic syndrome is rather rare.Key words
