Abstract

Sharp injures continue to pose a significant risk for the transmission of blood-borne pathogens from the patient to health care workers. Appropriate use of safe devices can significantly reduce the risk of this transmission. Based on the medical literature, an information about active and passive design safety features is provided. Crucial elements needed to properly evaluate safe devices are discussed. Some examples of safety devices are presented. Barriers faced in using these new products are addressed. The user-based approach to the selection and implementation of safe medical devices is also described. Med Pr 2007;58(1):13ś17
