Abstract

Background: The aim of the study was to present the modified method of assessing exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF). The assessment results are included in the EMF intensity measurement reports elaborated for the purpose of occupational health and safety in the case of works on a tower or a mast of large radio and television stations. Materials and Methods: The major emphasize was put on the measurements of radio and television towers and masts where EMF intensity is most extensive. Since workplaces on towers and masts are not permanent, it is not possible to define any regular route or typical task of a worker therefore, a new approach to the problem is offered. The method of calculating the maximum permissible dwell time at specified levels of the mast is shown. In these calculations the EMF dose the worker receives while climbing the particular parts of the mast is taken into consideration. Results: The results of calculations of the maximum permissible dwell time with respect to the level ofthe specified platform of the mast is shown in the table and also in the picture of the mast. The dose which the worker gets while climbing the mast reduces the maximum permissible dwell time on the highest platform of about 25% in this case. Conclusion: The way the results of the electromagnetic strength measurements are described in the report allows the worker to plan his work in the mast in such a way that the maximum permissible EMF dose is not exceeded during his work shift.
