Abstract
The vascular endothelium is a target for toxic effects of cadmium. The mechanisms responsible for these effects are complex and they embrace, e.g., the secretory function of endothelium and activity of mediators, coagulation and fibrinolysis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis and inflammation, red-ox state, gene expression and carcinogenesis. Copper, zinc and metallothioneins protect against cadmium toxicity in the vascular endothelium. Epidemiological and experimental studies indicate hypertensive effect of cadmium. The endothelial dysfunction seems to play an important role in the development of diseases of the circulatory system in persons exposed to cadmium.Key words
