Schedule of the Jubilee
 

In 2014 it has been 60 years since by the government resolution of January 30, 1954 Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine was distinguished from Medical University and became an independent scientific-research institution subordinate to the Minister of Health. The Institute is a highly regarded unit that deals with the issues of public and environmental health as well as with all the fields associated with a broadly understood occupational medicine. Since 1985 it has the name of prof. Jerzy Nofer, who was in charge of the Institute for more than 20 years.

The anniversary of establishment of the Institute was celebrated by organizing a ceremonial gala (2.06.2014 r.) and a series of conferences and thematic meetings ( 3-6.06.2014 r.). Anniversary celebrations took place in andel’s hotel, which is a part of Manufaktura complex in Lodz. Due to this occasion also a publication entitled ‘For labour, health and environment – 60 years of the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine’ was released.

During the gala prof. Konrad Rydzyński presented the history and main achievements of the Institute. Guests from the region and from central institutions involved in public health expressed a lot of warm words of acknowledgement and congratulations. They all emphasized significance of the Institute for Polish science as well as for the prestige of Lodz and the whole region. The distinguished persons, in appreciation of their services for the Institute, received memorial medals commemorating the figure of prof. Jerzy Nofer. On the occasion of the Jubilee the following events were organized: Lodz Days of Occupational Medicine, VII Nationwide Scientific Congress of Clinical Toxicologists, conferences: ‘Knowledge Management in Scientific Institutions’ and ‘A Driver’s Efficiency and Safety on the Roads’, a seminar ‘The Role of Accident Prevention in Maintaining Professional Activity of  Workers Aged 50 +’. There was also a meeting of the Public Health Committee, Polish Academy of Sciences and the Northern Dimension Partnership meeting in Public Health and Social Well-being - Task Group on Occupational Safety and Health.

The leading topic of Lodz Days of Occupational Medicine (3.06-5.06.2014) was the role of occupational medicine as a key element of pro-health actions targeted at working population. The conference was honored with the lectures of invited guests, including representatives of international organizations dealing with broadly understood employees’ health. Plenary Memorial Session concerning Ewa Wągrowski-Koski, PhD, who for many years served as a National Consultant in the field of occupational medicine constituted an important part of the Conference.

The VII Nationwide Scientific Congress of Clinical Toxicologists (3.06-5.06.2014) was devoted to the issues related with contemporary clinical toxicology, including military toxicology, and its role in the diagnostic process of acute poisonings. The conference was enriched with lectures concerning occupational and environmental toxicity of metals as well as the issues related to the effects of new psychoactive substances on the human health status.

The conference entitled ‘Knowledge Management in Scientific Institutions’ (4.06.2014) was a summary of the Innovative Economy Operational Programme project realized in the Department of Knowledge Management, as part of which an IT platform for management of scientific achievements of the Institute is being constructed. Authors of the lectures presented tools used for knowledge management, discussed contemporary attitude towards dissemination of the results of scientific research and towards communication between scientists.
The conference ‘A Driver’s Efficiency and Safety on the Roads’ (4.06.2014) was associated with the project entitled ‘Integrated system for monitoring the psycho-physical condition of vehicle drivers in order to minimize hazards in road traffic’ realized in the Institute as part of the Innovative Economy Operational Programme. The conference regarded the possibility of using vehicle driving simulators for the purpose of the studies of a driver’s reactions to various situations on the road and usefulness of simulator examinations in the case of assessment of ability to drive a car. The participants of the conference were employees of OSH from various communication companies, occupational medicine physicians as well as scientific workers from the universities and scientific-research institutes from all over the country. The conference was combined with a presentation of the simulation laboratory in the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, where the participants were transported by historic Trambus thanks to the courtesy of the Board of Municipal Transport Company in Lodz.

Seminar ‘‘The Role of Accident Prevention in Maintaining Professional Activity of Workers Aged 50 +’ (6.06.2014) was organized in cooperation with the Social Insurance Institution and it concerned health and social aspects of professional work of individuals aged 50 and older. The lecturers, apart from the specialists from the Institute, were representatives of Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, University of Lodz, Lodz University of Technology and University of Physical Education in Warsaw. The seminar was attended by more than 100 people from all over Poland and representing employers from various branches, physicians, scientific workers and OSH services. The participants regarded the seminar’s subject as very interesting and significant due to the demographic trends and problems of Polish society that are associated with them.

The meeting of Northern Dimension Partnership in Public Health and Social Well-being – Task Group on Occupational Safety and Health (3-4.06.2014) was attended by the representatives of WHO, EU-OSHA, ICOH and other institutions dealing with protection of working population’s health from Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, Germany and Poland. The invited guests delivered lectures devoted to the issue of older age employees, the relationship between age and work and health status, as well as maintenance of ability to work, especially among elderly people.

The Jubilee celebrations and thematic sessions were also attended by the members of Public Health Committee, Polish Academy of Sciences, who gathered during the XII Committee Meeting (2.06.2014). During the meeting they discussed current problems of public health in Poland and The EU, they discussed the topic of incidence, treatment and prevention of heart attacks in Poland. They also debated about the issues of cancer control strategy in Poland over the years 2015-2024.
