Scientific background

The main tasks of the Unit concern studies of genetic and epigenetic markers with taking into account the gene-gene, gene-environment or gene-diet type of interactions for the purpose of determination of the risk of incidence as well as diagnosis, prognosis or treatment of civilization diseases. For the study of molecular biomarkers we make use of the easily available biological material (i.e. peripheral blood, saliva, urine etc.) and we also use modern tools and research techniques. The detailed research issues include:
 - assessment of genetic predispositions to develop neoplasms in  associative and prospective studies,
 - assessment of constitutive gene expression in peripheral blood leukocytes,
 - evaluation of epigenetic regulation of the process of  non-genotoxic carcinogenesis by the use of a qualitative and quantitative assessment of DNA methylation, microRNA analysis, gene expression, genotyping and mutation analysis,
 - evaluation of epigenetic control of gene expression, among others, of these encoding selenoproteins, those associated with xenobiotics metabolism, antioxidant defense or circadian rhythm, those involved in the control of cell cycle, DNA apoptosis and DNA repair in healthy individuals and individuals suffering from cancer,
 - assessment of the influence of a diet and environmental factors on the process of mRNA expression and DNA methylation.
