The proposed project aims at creating a structure and operational tools as well as bases for population studies performance, databases development as well as in depth analyses of gathered data with the perspective of considerable progress concerning identification of environmental causes of neoplastic diseases in Poland. In other words, the main objective of the project is to create information infrastructure for the purpose of studies concerning environmental determinants of malignant cancers.

The detailed objectives include:


– increasing scientific potential of the consortium by developing tools to collect and process a wide scope of medical data, data obtained from questionnaires, data from the bank of samples as well as results of specialist analyses (e.g. genetic and molecular) in a coherent research material through the data standardization,
– development of bases for carrying out statistical analyses of data and testing hypotheses concerning the studies on environmental factors, which determine the incidence of malignant cancers and studies concerning interaction between genetic and environmental factors,
– developing potential for selection of groups of examined patients according to specific criteria used in the case of scientific research based on reports generated from ‘patients’ library’,
– collection of medical data, most of all from hospital system and equipment systems for the purpose of taking clinical decisions,
– development of communication channels between the researchers and channels of data transmission.

In Poland malignant cancers constitute a problem with increasing medical and economic significance. Results of epidemiological analyses indicate that broadly understood environmental factors, including occupational factors, are responsible for the incidence of at least 19% of malignant cancer cases. If we also take into consideration the factors dependent on lifestyle, and having relationship with widely understood environment, in which we live, this percentage can reach 70 – 80%. Identification of environmental carcinogens, early biomarkers of exposure and neoplastic diseases, or identification of populations susceptible to the effect of those factors play a key role in prevention of neoplastic diseases but also affects economy and finances of the country, by among others, lengthening occupational activity and enormously reducing costs related to treatment of individuals suffering from cancer. Conducting population epidemiological studies allows to indicate civilization diseases risk factors, factors influencing inefficiency of therapies and those increasing the risk of serious complications during the course of these diseases and is included in the programme of strategic studies in many world’s centers. Realization of studies in the interdisciplinary consortia, which apart from doctors and pathomorphologists should also include experts in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, epidemiology, statistics and information technology constitutes the condition of achieving considerable progress in the discussed area. The developed consortium constitutes a major potential for such studies performance. The areas of knowledge, which the participants of the consortium specialize in include a number of fields related to the studies on cancers, starting from basic studies, through epidemiology and finishing with clinical oncology. These are, in particular, specialists in the field of toxicology, chemistry and biochemistry, molecular biology, epidemiology, biostatistics as well as bio-information technology and oncology. Complementary skills of the scientific participants facilitate determination of current issues related to studies on cancer, planning and carrying out studies devoted to assessment of risk of cancer incidence and determination of significant etiological factors.
