Impacts of low dose radiation exposure (MEDIRAD)

The Department of Radiological Protection of the Institute of Occupational Medicine in Lodz participates in Work Package 2 (WP2) and more specifically in Task 2.2.3 dedicated to the optimisation of fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures.

The main objective of the Task 2.2.3 is to assess the new type of shields, which may potentially provide additional protection against ionizing radiation for physicians performing interventional procedures in areas such as the brain or ocular lenses. This is an important topic due to the fact that physicians are a professional group receiving one of the highest doses in the medical exposure as well as due to emerging scientific papers reporting incidences of head cancers in this professional group. Based on the literature review, the following protective tools were selected:
- lead cap and mask
- lead blanket /radioprotective drapes
- 'zero gravity' suspended system
- lead-free aprons
on which the information in the scientific literature seems to be incomplete. Therefore, the aim of the project is to deepen the knowledge, based on measurements carried out in clinical conditions as well as Monte Carlo simulations, on the effectiveness of the above mentioned shields in protection of interventional cardiologists against ionizing radiation.
