IPRI – A pooled analysis of mortality and cancer incidence among workers employed in the European rubber industry since 1975

A project realized within the Independent Research Partner Agreement Numerous epidemiological studies on the increased mortality among the workers of rubber industry in comparison with the whole population of a given country have appeared since 1950s. Malignant cancers constituted the main cause of the increased number of deaths. Among cancers of specific location and with increased frequency of incidence in people working in the rubber industry bladder cancer and leukemia were observed.

The study is therefore a part of an international project concerning the frequency of occurrence of malignant cancers among workers of rubber industry employed after 1975. The study will include seven European cohort epidemiological studies including workers employed in tires and rubber goods production after 1975. The cohorts will come from 5 European countries (Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Great Britain). According to the opinion of experts of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) employment in rubber industry is connected with the increased risk of incidence of bladder cancer, lung cancer, larynx cancer and leukemia. The study will allow for assessment of mortality and the risk of death due to malignant cancers among people employed in rubber industry after 1975, when the hygienic conditions were improved. Its aim is to analyze the frequency of deaths due to cancers in a multi-center group of workers employed in the European rubber industry since 1975 in terms of exposure indicators: the first year of employment, length of service and production department.

The study  will be carried out using a cohort method, which assumes observation of two Polish cohorts (a follow-up study) including about 12 thousands of workers of the rubber industry. For each individual included in the cohort it is planned to obtain information if the person is still alive or has already died; in case of dead people – information on the exact date and cause of death. Status of the cohort members will be obtained from the collection of Universal Electronic System of Civil Registration (PESEL) or from the local registers of Civil Status Offices (USC) from all over the country. The risk of death will be assessed by the use of Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR). Polish population will constitute a reference population.
