Night Shift Work – melatonin metabolism and breast cancer risk factors in nurses

Project funded from a grant from Polish-Norwegian research Fund.

Cross-sectional study in nurses and midwives included 356 nurses currently working on rotating night-shifts and 369 women working only during the day. The objectives of the project include investigation of the association between rotating night shift work and metabolism of melatonin, oxidative stress parameters, mammographic density and genetic polymorphism in the selected genes. Data on breast cancer risk factors and occupational history were collected during in-person interviews; body weight and height were measured. Blood and urinary samples were collected, mammographic examinations performed. A database with questionnaire data,  results of the biochemical and genetic analyses and a biobank (urine, serum, isolated genomic DNA and total RNA, cDNA syntethised) has been set-up. The following parameters have been determined: 6 sulfatoxymelatonine – biomarker of melatonin synthesis, sex hormones, biomarkers of antioxidative profile, genetic polymorphismand expression  in selected genes: CYP1A2 circadian clock genes; mammographic density was estimated with Madena software.
